The Youth Pride Association Condemns Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida Legislature

This comes amid an expansion of “Don’t Say Gay” law, and proposed Anti-LGBTQ legislation

(April 19, 2023) – The Youth Pride Association, a national nonprofit organization working to promote and foster the acceptance of LGBTQ students,  joins countless LGBTQ organizations, educators, parents, and students in condemning Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida’s Board of Education, and the Florida Legislature for a new wave of Anti-LGBTQ policy and legislation.

On Wednesday, The Florida Board of Education approved an expansion of the discriminatory and hateful “Don’t Say Gay” law to include all grades of public education, per the request of Governor DeSantis. This effectively bans any classroom discussion on LGBTQ topics in all grades, silencing the countless LGBTQ individuals who attend Florida public schools.

This also comes amid Florida’s House of Representatives passing a bill criminalizing gender-affirming healthcare for transgender minors, another bill banning minors from drag shows, and a bill banning LGBTQ individuals from using bathrooms that match their gender identity.

“Ron DeSantis and the Florida legislature are working to criminalize LGBTQ existence,” said Cameron Bartosiewicz, President at Youth Pride Association. “LGBTQ students already face disproportion discrimination, harassment, and assault in our schools. Ron DeSantis aims to make every aspect of LGBTQ existence in hell for students in Florida.”
