YPA: a Year in Review

Rancho Mission Viejo, CA (November 4th, 2021) – The Youth Pride Association (YPA) turns one year old today. Here is a quick recap of all the progress YPA has made in ensuring all students can succeed, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity, since its founding on November 4th, 2020.

This year, YPA developed and launched our Acceptance Week program, a program in high schools that works to improve conditions for LGBTQ students. This program is now nearly two years in the making, first conceptualized back in February of 2020. This very program was the initial reason YPA was founded.

YPA is bringing the Acceptance Week program to Royal High School in Semi Valley, CA, and their over 2,100 students from February 28th to March 4th, 2020! More high schools are soon to come!

Since this program’s launch, YPA received the 2021 CSU Channel Islands President’s Award for Student Innovation, watch the full acceptance speech given at the CI fall convocation below:

While these are significant milestones, this isn’t all YPA has been able to accomplish this year. In September 2021, YPA became a CSU Channel Islands Community Partner.

Also this year, YPA also launched the Peer Advocate program, a individual-focused peer support, peer education, and peer advocacy program for higher education students! Currently, this program is offering services to CSU Channel Islands over 7,500 students, but more colleges and universities are soon to come. Coming this month, YPA is launching a completely virtual variation of the Peer Advocate program for any higher education LGBTQ students seeking additional support!

A lot has been done this year, but this is just the start.

Thank you to our gracious donors, our amazing team, and you! Without your support, none of this would have been possible. The future is looking bright for LGBTQ youth in our schools!
